My love of Africa and African art began a few years ago, when I visited Kenya and Tanzania on a visit with a group of others for the purpose of gaining a greater understanding of their culture. I, like so many others before me, fell in love with this wonderful country and its colourful and diverse people. We (with a translator) taught a lesson to a group of 500 students in a school in Tanzania, led a kids club session, visited the Nairobi hospital, witnessed the work being taught at an ethical farm, gave a talk to a group of village women about current issues that affect their lives, visited a missionary, and brought her supplies and also assisted in a clinic in Kibera, Nairobi (the largest slum in Africa with a population of around one million), among other things. ; In preparation for the trip, we learned how to respect the African culture and also learnt some Swahili to prepare us. I returned to Australia with an interest in working with/for Africans here in Australia, to assist in promoting their wonderfully diverse culture and as a result, Focus Artefacts came into being. To this end, Focus Artefacts is dedicated to providing a platform for exhibiting African fine art and promoting African artists both now residing in Australia as well as Africa. |
